Problem Statement

The worlds growing population and availability of plane trips mean more air travel consumption (Abdullah, Chew, & Hamid, 2016). Impending shortages might impede the industry from meeting consumers needs. It is well-known that the aviation industry lacks workplace diversity: out of all pilots, technicians, and cabin crew, only 22% are women (Turney, 2018). Racial and ethnic minorities are becoming better represented within the field, but the problem is far from being resolved (Ison, Herron, & Weiland, 2015). Another issue is underfunding since airline companies have to increase their expenses to meet the environmental guidelines and also handle rising oil prices (Hari, Yaakob, & Binitha, 2015; Higham et al. 2017). Researchers need to gain insights into perceived barriers to recruitment and human resource management.

Methodology

The study focuses on US aviation managers knowledge and attitude toward barriers to recruitment. It employs stratified convenience sampling and qualitative design with the main method being face-to-face semi-structured interviews with open questions. It is expected that through a series of interviews, researchers will be able to draw a full picture of contributing factors to inhibited recruitment as perceived by managers. The findings will provide practical recommendations for managers in the aviation industry to tackle the issue from within.
