When I think of the things I want to accomplish in my career, my desires are to enjoy what I do and to feel comfortable and competent in what I do. I want my career to be rewarding and challenging, not boring, and to keep me from feeling worn out because of the ability to change courses. My career should make me feel that I make a difference in the lives of people on a daily basis and give me a sense of satisfaction in my life. I am interested in pursuing a career in nursing and want to be a certified nursing assistant because it allows me to do all these things and much more.

My family has two generations of nurses in various areas of care. They have played a major role in my decision to explore this field. I admire the compassionate attitudes they possess about their jobs. They are able to laugh about humorous things and show empathy in sad times. They love what they do. Listening to their experiences has really impacted my life and influenced my decision to become a CNA.

My family’s experiences led me to want to share in some of those experiences. I did a clinical internship in high school where I was given the opportunity to visit and observe different departments in the hospital such as the emergency room, intensive care unit, X-ray, medical surgery technicians, and medical laboratory to name a few. I also had the opportunity to observe how the nurses interacted with the patients and administered treatments as needed. The second, and most eye-opening experience that I had was at a nursing facility where I got hands-on experience of bathing, feeding, and dressing patients. I can still feel a sense of fulfillment in doing those tasks. I feel that I made a difference for a short time in the lives of people who longed for a special touch from a caring person in the absence of family and loved ones or those who scarcely visited. Sometimes, I would find myself taking them things to read, to color, and flowers for their room. This was the time when I knew that I had a passion for people. These experiences inspired me to get my CNA license.

My passion for people more than anything else has convinced me that I am a good candidate for this field. A career pathway in nursing will offer me growth in various levels of my professional skills, allow me to work in various institutions and organizations, excellent wages, mobility, and the flexibility I will need for my family when that day comes.

Finally, I have researched the field of nursing and looked at the requirements for all levels and the amount of time and effort it involves to become proficient in this field. I have thought about my ability to learn and comprehend medical terminology, to work as a team member, the wage potentials, and how this career pathway would fit into my life when I decide to marry and have a family. After careful thought and evaluation of every aspect of the nursing field, I know that this career pathway is the best fit and choice for me. For these reasons, I want to pursue a career in nursing and become a certified nursing assistant.
