The short film series How You See Me touches upon the problem of stereotypes and labeling in interpersonal communication. It involves members of different social and racial groups that are most often labeled in society discussing how they perceive stereotypes and what steps can be taken to reduce the existing tensions in communication. The main idea expressed in the videos is that in order for the problem to be addressed it should first be acknowledged, and people should not be afraid to bring up this topic in conversations.

A persons culture, race, and background define the way they perceive other people, especially members of other social groups. I believe that the key factor that determines the level of tolerance in the community in which a person was raised. If an individual grew up in a predominantly white community, they are less comfortable while communicating with members of other racial groups and are more prone to stereotypes. On the other hand, being raised in a diverse environment provides the level of tolerance that makes it easy for a person to talk to people of other races and backgrounds and recognize and respect racial and other differences.

I think that my perception of other cultural groups is primarily based on my own experience. My family has also influenced me greatly, as well as some stereotypes absorbed from the media and the internet. However, I try to judge a person from my impressions of them rather than gender or racial stereotypes. I believe that the key to successful communication is to develop an ability to study before judging and never label a person before getting to know them.
