Here, Updike represents someone from a lower to the middle class of the society, a person unsatisfied with their job which continues to work to support himself. Sammy, on the other hand, rebels against the behaviors that are shown as typical for the middle class. Updike himself notes that his stories, including the A&P, are autobiographical, which means that his characters and events are a recollection of the authors experiences in real life (Shafer and Updike 1). Hence, this story accurately shows how people from the middle-class act and are examples of rebellious behavior.
