Place your Research Topic below: African American Children Suffering from Anxiety and Depression

Place your Thesis Statement below: Depression and anxiety are common among African-American children and adolescents, but they face significant barriers to receiving care and treatment due to their age and race.

Place your Follow-Up Statement/s below (be sure to include at least 4 subject areas/themes and 2 specific areas of diversity):

  • This paper will address the theme of depression and anxiety among African-American children and adolescents. The discussion will include the prevalence, causes, symptoms, and outcomes of these conditions among the selected population group.
  • This research will examine the treatment of depression and anxiety and factors affecting therapy in culturally diverse youth. It is crucial to consider that there are significant inequalities in obtaining assistance for representatives of minorities (Stewart et al., 2012). Moreover, the stigma accompanying mental conditions can exacerbate existing inequalities.
  • This paper will address the parents role in identifying the problem and getting the help children may need. Studies note significant inconsistencies in children and adolescents perception of their depressive conditions and parents perception of the issues present, especially in African-American families (Breland-Noble & Weller, 2012). Given the dependence of youth on guardians, such a discrepancy can interfere with treatment.
  • This paper will also focus on opportunities to prevent the development of depression in African-American children and adolescents. Studies demonstrate that family relationships, particularly parenting style, family functioning, and environment, have a significant impact on the problem (Washington et al., 2017). As a result, approaches and guidelines for preventive interventions involving families can be developed.
  • This research includes several aspects of diversity since the target population is African-American children and adolescents. As a younger generation, they cannot act independently in all circumstances. They need help and support in identifying the problem and getting help for treatment. As African-Americans, the group can face severe discrimination, interfering with addressing depression and anxiety. The intersection of race and age points to the complexity of the problem and the importance of handling it.
