The Scholarship Jacket is a short story full of emotion and conflict by Martha Salinas. She has written various short stories that have been published in collections and journals, her most popular story being The Scholarship Jacket.

The main character of the story, Martha, is a young and frail-looking girl who is highly intellectual. She lives with her grandparents in a small town in Texas as her parents were unable to afford to raise eight children. Although she isnt raised like most, Martha is ambitious, phenomenal, and really wants the scholarship jacket. This jacket marks the academic accomplishments of a student who does exceedingly well and gets the best average. The green and gold jacket had been previously won by her sister Rosie, and Martha needed to surpass the expectations people had of her. The story picks up when Martha overhears a conversation between two of her teachers arguing about who deserves the jacket. The competition is between Martha and her classmate Joanne whose father is extremely influential and plays a big part in the schools board. Martha couldnt believe that she could lose the thing she most wanted because of her familys financial status and ethnicity. The next day, Martha is informed that the jacket instead of being free of coats would cost $15 this year when she visits the principal and that if she is unable to pay this fee the jacket would be awarded to the student next in line, Joanne.

Every character in the story is explained very well and they all have a reason for their actions. Martha is portrayed as a vulnerable girl, who with the support of her family and teachers that believe in her, can conquer!

This short story is so heartwarming and puts a smile on my face. It is well written with an extensive yet easy-to-understand vocabulary and is explained marvelously although its a small word count. Marthas roller coaster of emotions is beautifully explained with a more than satisfactory beginning, middle, and end. I would have loved to see more of Marthas grandparents and her relationship with her teacher Mr. Schmidt. They play important roles in Marthas life and upbringing making them vital to the plot.

I think the story was such a wonderful reading experience and would definitely recommend it to readers of all ages as many would relate to Martha and her story. The story battles discrimination and teaches you so much in very few words. I think the beauty of stories comes from what morals they teach the readers and how much they take away from the book. The Scholarship jacket had a great impact on me, I would rate it a solid 9 out of 10!
