Introduction

The Oath of the Horatii is one of the great paintings done by Jacques-Louis David. The painting was completed in Rome before the close of 1785. It was widely and symbolically used as a communication tool in political and philosophical issues. It is apparent that romanticism influenced Jacques-Louis to appeal to human needs and public sensation. Owing to the new romantic style, David secured an opportunity to adventure into more realistic paintings.

Ideas that come to mind

This image focuses on the history of Horatious (a Roman family). Symbolically, the painting calls for more loyalty and allegiance to the state. Three brothers are standing in front of their father. The latter is holding three swords. On the right-hand side of the image, two women are apparently engulfed in sorrow. The women are part of the dueling parties. From the image, it is evident that a republic is larger than a family, and allegiance to the state is fundamental.

Personal opinion

In my view, the Oath of the Horatti vividly packages the whole melodrama in the Roman republic into a fine piece of art. The image represents a critical moment in history. It is also filled with ideas and ironic twists. While some might regard it as unsettling since it seems to reflect or ignore the sorrow of the women and family, I visualize a sense of sacrifice and inspired heroism that the three men depict to maintain the state. David uniquely uses color and lines in the image.

Conclusion

In summary, the piece of art is captivating. It is a moral guide on patriotism and promotes the need to protect a state. I suppose that the primary signs that reflect Davids important message on confidence, sacrifice, and loyalty are critical in the image.
